Reading Time Calculator
Estimate silent reading time from whitespace-separated words and your selected reading speed.
About the Reading Time Calculator
The Reading Time Calculator estimates how long it will take to silently read a piece of text based on its word count and your selected reading speed.
Paste your text into the calculator and enter a reading speed in words per minute (WPM). The tool counts the whitespace-separated words and uses your chosen speed to estimate the reading time in minutes and seconds.
This can be useful for articles, blog posts, essays, documentation, newsletters and other written content where you want a quick estimate of how long a reader may need.
How to Calculate Reading Time
Paste or type your text into the calculator, then select the reading speed you want to use in words per minute.
The calculator counts the words and estimates the time required to read them at that speed.
For example, a text containing 159 words at a reading speed of 200 words per minute produces:
Estimated reading time: 0 min 48 sec
Words: 159
Speed: 200 words/min
Changing the reading speed changes the estimated time. A higher WPM produces a shorter estimate, while a lower WPM produces a longer estimate.
Reading Time Formula
The basic reading-time formula is:
Reading time in minutes = Word count ÷ Words per minute
Using your example:
159 ÷ 200 = 0.795 minutes
To express the fractional part in seconds:
0.795 × 60 = 47.7 seconds
Rounded to the nearest second, the estimated reading time is:
48 seconds
This is an estimate rather than a guarantee because actual reading speed varies from person to person and can also depend on the type and difficulty of the text.
What Does Words Per Minute Mean?
Words per minute (WPM) is a measure of reading speed. It describes approximately how many words someone reads during one minute.
For example, if a piece of text contains 400 words:
At 200 WPM:
400 ÷ 200 = 2 minutesAt 250 WPM:
400 ÷ 250 = 1 minute 36 seconds
Because reading speeds differ, WebToola lets you choose the WPM value instead of assuming that every reader reads at exactly the same speed.
What Affects Reading Time?
The calculated result should be treated as an estimate of silent reading time. Actual reading time can vary depending on the reader and the material.
Technical or unfamiliar material may take longer to read than simple prose. Long sentences, complex vocabulary, numbers, code and the need to pause and understand concepts can also affect how quickly someone moves through a piece of text.
For that reason, changing the WPM setting can give you a more appropriate estimate for your particular audience or type of content.
When Is a Reading Time Calculator Useful?
Reading-time estimates can be useful for blog posts, articles, essays, newsletters, documentation and educational content.
Writers and publishers can use the estimate to understand the approximate time commitment of a piece before publishing it. Readers can use it to judge whether they have enough time to read something, while content creators can compare the length of different drafts.
If you mainly need detailed text counts rather than a time estimate, WebToola’s Word & Character Counter is the more appropriate tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is reading time calculated?
The calculator divides the number of whitespace-separated words in your text by the reading speed you select in words per minute.
For example, 400 words at 200 WPM gives an estimated reading time of 2 minutes.
What is WPM?
WPM stands for words per minute. It represents the number of words used to estimate how much text can be read in one minute.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
It depends on the selected reading speed. At 200 words per minute, 1,000 words would have an estimated reading time of 5 minutes.
Does a higher WPM make the estimated reading time shorter?
Yes. If the word count stays the same, increasing the words-per-minute value reduces the estimated reading time. Lowering the WPM increases it.
Is the calculated reading time exact?
No. It is an estimate based on the text’s word count and the reading speed you select. Actual reading time varies depending on the individual reader, the complexity of the content and other factors.
How does the calculator count words?
The Reading Time Calculator counts whitespace-separated words in the text. This means its word count is based on how the entered text is separated by spaces and other whitespace.
Is this the same as speaking time?
No. The calculator estimates silent reading time. Speaking, presenting or narrating text can occur at a different speed, so the result should not be treated as an estimate of speech or voice-over duration.
Does WebToola store the text I enter?
No. The Reading Time Calculator runs in your browser and does not send or save the text you enter.
