URL Encoder/Decoder

URL Encoder/Decoder

Encode or decode a URL component, such as one query parameter value. Decoding leaves plus signs unchanged; this is not form-urlencoded decoding.

Runs in your browser. This plugin does not send or save your inputs.

About the URL Encoder/Decoder

The URL Encoder/Decoder lets you encode text as a URL component or decode percent-encoded data back into readable text.

URL encoding is useful when values containing spaces, punctuation or reserved URL characters need to be safely represented within parts of a URL, such as query parameter values.

This tool performs URL component encoding and decoding. It does not perform application/x-www-form-urlencoded decoding, so plus signs (+) remain unchanged when decoding.

How to Encode a URL Component

Enter the text or URL component you want to encode and select Encode component.

Characters that have special meaning in URLs are converted to percent-encoded representations where required.

For example, encoding:

https://www.example.com/search?q=sample+short+text&id=46456464&mid=lk345jlk34&tid=3423

produces:

https%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dsample%2Bshort%2Btext%26id%3D46456464%26mid%3Dlk345jlk34%26tid%3D3423

Notice that characters such as :, /, ?, =, + and & are encoded when the entire string is treated as a URL component.

For typical usage, you would often encode an individual query parameter value rather than an entire URL.

How to Decode a URL Component

To reverse percent encoding, enter the encoded component and select Decode component.

For example:

https%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dsample%2Bshort%2Btext%26id%3D46456464%26mid%3Dlk345jlk34%26tid%3D3423

decodes to:

https://www.example.com/search?q=sample+short+text&id=46456464&mid=lk345jlk34&tid=3423

The encoded sequences are converted back to their corresponding characters.

Importantly, the + characters in this example remain plus signs. This tool does not automatically interpret them as spaces.

What Is URL Encoding?

URL encoding, commonly called percent encoding, represents certain characters using a percent sign (%) followed by hexadecimal digits.

For example:

Space → %20
Plus sign (+) → %2B
Ampersand (&) → %26
Equals sign (=) → %3D
Question mark (?) → %3F

This is useful because some characters have special meanings within URL syntax.

For example, & is commonly used to separate query parameters, while = separates a parameter name from its value. Encoding these characters when they are part of the actual data helps distinguish the data from URL syntax.

URL Component Encoding vs. Form URL Encoding

URL component decoding and form-urlencoded decoding are related but are not identical.

A particularly important difference involves the plus sign (+).

In application/x-www-form-urlencoded data, a + can represent a space. A form decoder may therefore convert:

sample+short+text

into:

sample short text

WebToola’s URL Encoder/Decoder does not perform that conversion. When decoding a URL component:

sample%2Bshort%2Btext

becomes:

sample+short+text

The plus signs remain plus signs.

If you need to represent an actual space using URL component encoding, it is normally encoded as %20.

When Should You Encode a URL Component?

URL component encoding is useful when constructing URLs containing dynamic values, particularly query parameter values.

Suppose a search parameter needs to contain:

red & blue

Using the raw ampersand could be misinterpreted as the separator for another query parameter. Encoding the value represents the special characters safely within that component.

URL encoding and decoding are therefore commonly encountered when working with web applications, APIs, query strings, redirects and dynamically generated URLs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does URL encoding do?

URL encoding represents characters that may have special meanings in a URL using percent-encoded sequences. For example, an ampersand (&) can be represented as %26.

How do I decode a percent-encoded URL component?

Paste the encoded value into the tool and select Decode component. Percent-encoded sequences such as %20, %26 and %3D will be decoded into their corresponding characters.

What does %20 mean in a URL?

%20 represents a space in percent encoding.

What does %2B mean in a URL?

%2B represents a literal plus sign (+).

Does this decoder convert plus signs to spaces?

No. Plus signs remain unchanged. This tool performs URL component decoding rather than application/x-www-form-urlencoded decoding.

For example:

hello+world

remains:

hello+world

It is not converted to hello world.

Should I encode an entire URL or just a URL component?

This tool can encode the text you provide, but URL component encoding is generally intended for individual components, such as a query parameter value.

Encoding an entire URL also encodes structural characters such as :, /, ?, = and &, which may not be what you want when constructing a normal navigable URL.

Is URL encoding the same as encryption?

No. URL encoding is a way of representing characters for use in URLs. It does not provide confidentiality or security and should not be used to hide sensitive information.

Does WebToola store the URLs or text I enter?

No. The URL Encoder/Decoder runs in your browser and does not send or save the values you enter.
