Word & Character Counter
Count words, Unicode code points, and nonempty paragraphs. Words are whitespace-separated; counts may differ from language-specific editors.
About the Word & Character Counter
The Word & Character Counter quickly analyzes text and shows the number of words, characters, characters excluding whitespace, and nonempty paragraphs.
Paste or type your text into the tool to get an instant count. Words are counted using whitespace as the separator, while characters are counted as Unicode code points.
This can be useful for articles, essays, social media content, descriptions, forms, assignments and other situations where you need to check the length or structure of a piece of text.
How to Count Words and Characters
Enter or paste your text into the counter. The tool analyzes it and displays four measurements:
- Words — the number of whitespace-separated words.
- Characters (Unicode code points) — the number of Unicode code points in the text.
- Characters excluding whitespace — the character count with whitespace excluded.
- Paragraphs — the number of nonempty paragraphs.
For example, your sample text produces:
Words: 82
Characters (Unicode code points): 589
Characters excluding whitespace: 508
Paragraphs: 1
This lets you check several useful text-length measurements at the same time.
How Does the Word Counter Work?
WebToola counts whitespace-separated words. In simple terms, sequences of text separated by spaces, line breaks or other whitespace are treated as separate words.
For example:
WebToola makes useful tools
contains 4 words.
This approach provides a predictable general-purpose count, but word-counting rules can differ between applications and languages. As a result, WebToola’s count may not always exactly match a word processor, publishing platform or language-specific text editor.
How Are Characters Counted?
The tool counts characters using Unicode code points rather than simply counting bytes.
Unicode allows computers to represent text from many writing systems as well as symbols and other characters. However, a Unicode code point is not always identical to what a person visually perceives as a single character.
Some displayed characters—particularly certain emoji, combined characters and other complex Unicode sequences—can consist of multiple code points. For that reason, the character count should specifically be understood as a Unicode code-point count.
Characters With and Without Whitespace
WebToola provides both a total character count and a count that excludes whitespace.
The total character count includes whitespace present in the text, while the second measurement removes whitespace from the count. Whitespace can include spaces, tabs and line breaks.
This distinction is useful because different writing requirements may define character limits differently. Some limits include spaces, while others are concerned primarily with non-whitespace content.
How Are Paragraphs Counted?
The paragraph count measures nonempty paragraphs in the entered text.
This can be useful for quickly checking the structure of longer articles, essays, descriptions or other multi-paragraph content without manually counting each paragraph.
Empty sections between paragraphs do not themselves count as additional nonempty paragraphs.
When Is a Word and Character Counter Useful?
Word and character counts are useful whenever content needs to fit a particular length or you simply want to understand how long a piece of writing is.
Writers, students, editors, developers and content creators can use the tool to check articles, essays, descriptions, form entries, drafts and other text.
If you want to estimate how long the text will take to read, use WebToola’s Reading Time Calculator, which calculates an estimated silent reading time from the word count and a selected reading speed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I count the words in my text?
Paste or type your text into the Word & Character Counter. The tool counts words based on whitespace separation and displays the total word count.
Does the character count include spaces?
The tool provides both measurements. Characters (Unicode code points) includes whitespace, while Characters excluding whitespace removes whitespace from the count.
What does “Unicode code points” mean?
A Unicode code point is a numerical value used by Unicode to represent a text element such as a letter, number, punctuation mark or symbol.
Some characters that appear visually as a single symbol can consist of more than one Unicode code point, so a code-point count is not always identical to the number of visually perceived characters.
Why might the word count differ from another editor?
Different applications can use different rules to determine what constitutes a word. WebToola uses whitespace-separated words, so its result may differ from editors that use language-specific or application-specific word-counting rules.
Does the counter include punctuation in the word count?
Because words are separated based on whitespace, punctuation attached to a sequence of text does not normally create an additional word by itself.
For example:
Hello, world!
contains 2 whitespace-separated words.
How are paragraphs counted?
The tool counts nonempty paragraphs. Blank paragraph areas do not add to the nonempty paragraph count.
Can I use this to calculate reading time?
This tool gives you the word count but does not itself estimate reading duration. For that, use WebToola’s Reading Time Calculator, where you can choose a reading speed in words per minute.
Does WebToola store the text I enter?
No. The Word & Character Counter runs in your browser and does not send or save the text you enter.
